Rest in tents at Cape Tarkhankut. Atlesh Rocks

December 2019 · 3 min read · Ukraine

After a few days of living in tents, we decided to go on an excursion to the Atlesh Rocks at Cape Tarkhankut. Cape Tarkhankut is the westernmost point of the Crimean peninsula. The closest settlement is the village of Olenivka, located in Karadzhinsky Bay (we lived in tents not far from it). Atlesh is a steep cliff up to 64 meters above sea level. Atlesh is divided into Big and Little, Big Atlesh length of about 8.2 km, Little - 1.6 km. There are many grottoes, small caves and bizarre rocks jover the water.

Big Atlesh is characterized by high cliffs that reach 64 meters. There are small coves and rocky beaches as well as grottoes. The Big Atlesch's business card can be called the huge arch that arose from the effects of sea waves and wind. This part of Tarkhankut is especially attractive for lovers of wildlife and diving. It is worth noting that in front of the Big Atlesh, about 110-115 meters from the shore, at a depth of 10-12 meters, there is an unusual underwater museum. It originated in 1992, with the submersion of Lenin's first bust. It was the first year after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the same busts that stood on every corner across the country, began to dismantle. In 10-15 years, the underwater museum reached almost 100 exhibits, mostly busts and monuments of the USSR, but other exhibits: the Eiffel Tower, the Tower Bridge and the Soviet school desk. At the desk, photo divers often visit the museum quite often. In general, divers love to dive into the water near Cape Tarkhankut, because there is the cleanest sea off the coast of Crimea. I was able to see this personally because I was diving with a mask and snorkel, but only near our base.

Not far from the cliffs of Atlesh is the Fishing State, a place where fishermen swim with their catch. That's where we arrived the bus. There is a small chapel, a fishing farm, a diving school and a dolphinarium on the territory of the Fishing State. Entrance to the state is paid, I no longer remember exactly how much we paid, apparently it was included in the price of the trip. Just down the chapel is a descent to the sea. Large iron ladders descend to the water, to a small pier. There are always several boats on the quay, which will make a sightseeing excursion to and from the Bowl of Love for a reasonable fee. This is exactly what we did, ie we rented several such boats (there were many of us) and made a fascinating voyage by sea, after admiring the view of the Big Atlesh in the distance and taking plenty of photos. Next time I will tell you about our journey by sea to the Bowl of Love.
