The Charm of Lake Laut Tawar at an Altitude of 1200 Meters Above Sea Level

April 2021 · 2 min read · Aceh

Aceh Province, the westernmost province in the Republic of Indonesia, is an area that has so many tourism destinations. Although only a few have been included in the tourist map for world class leaders, such as Iboih, Sabang and Simeulue Island.

Meanwhile, several others have become a destination for local tourists, such as Lake Laut Tawar. This lake is in the Gayo highlands. Local people call it Lake Lut Tawar. This lake is right on the edge of Takengon City, the capital of Central Aceh Regency.

Located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, of course this lake has an interesting panorama. Many coffee gardens around the lake. In addition, in the lake there are also fish that are only found here, called Depik fish. Small in shape like anchovies.

Many local residents make this lake the center of their economy. Making cages for lobster breeding and fishing for depik fish are some examples of their financially profitable activities.

Some of them who have capital, build small restaurants or cafes around the lake.

Lake Laut Tawar is truly a complement to the beauty of Takengon City, which is located between the slopes of the mountains. The area of the lake is estimated at 70 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 80 meters or about 260 feet. It's deep enough.

This lake was formed by volcanic eruptions in the past. This lake is also the estuary of dozens of rivers there. That's why the water in this lake always rises drastically when it rains.

I have visited this lake very often. Since I was in middle school, I have visited this freshwater lake with family and class mate. What's more, the distance from the city where I live to Takengon is getting closer after the road via Mount Salak is functioning.

From some of the photos I have uploaded, it is enough to see the allure of this lake, right?
