Castel del Monte, the Citadel of Mysteries

At the end of November 1250, during the hunting in the forests of his beloved Apulia, Frederick II suddenly felt a strange weakness and pain in his stomach. Soon, the pain and fever became unbearable and the emperor ordered to stop halfway, in Castel Fiorentino (Torremaggiore).

This place was the last shelter for the emperor: the dysentery slowly burned the weakened body. There were rumors that the emperor was poisoned by his unlawful son Manfred ...

Friedrich was predicted that he would die in a place with a flower name. For this reason, the emperor avoided Florence.

But when he found out what's the name of the castle where he was brought, Friedrich realized that death is close... He had time only to give orders for the testament. Most likely, the emperor died of dysentery.

Emperor Frederick II, being an educated man and philanthropist, created at the court a mathematical school. The Great Fibonacci participated in the work of it.

However, it is also possible that in the castle bold experimentation were conducted. Small fireplaces in the rooms of the castle were not adapted to receive a large number of guests and lush banquets. But they were excellent for heating reagents.

The location of the castle on top of the hill made it impossible for outsiders to feel the unusual smell of burning, and allows to control the entire district. Only trusted persons could approach the castle, and the servants were not from local peasants and artisans, but from the inhabitants of the remote cities of Monopoli, Bitonto and Bitetto.

Anyway, Castel del Monte fully deserves its designation as a World Heritage Site, and your visit :)

I visited it in a low season. Strong wind after the rain on the top of the hill, from where you can observe all neighborhoods - it was really breathtaking.
