Lost on the map. My trip to Ukrainian Steppe, Day 1 part 1

May 2019 · 4 min read · Mykolaiv Oblast

On April 26, on the anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, my husband and I went out on a drive to the south of Ukraine. Our first stop finally turned out to be close to the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, located in the steppe on the left bank of the Southern Bug River.

Quick plan

We had 4 payed days off, and 3 days and 2 nights were dedicated for entire trip. It is a long way up there, and we considered that the roads are in a poor conditions after long winter. Thus, our plan consisted of 2 main destinations, and then we'll take it from there.

First destination is a beautiful canyon of Southern Bug river we have been to 2 years ago. We felt in love with its breathtaking landscape, river island, rocks and amazing flora and fauna.

The second is a State Nature Reserve, and out primary interest was American Bison (none of us has ever seen it).

Place to stay

Our starting point was Myhiia - a small town but it is also a local center of tourism and rafting. There are plenty of nice mini hotels and camping. All main attractions are reachable on 1-day trip.

We'd like to chose the same place to stay as the last time - Hostynnyy Dvir. We start booking a bit late, so it was all booked and our choice was not big: cheap camping or rather expensive hotel. I am a person that need comfort and peace for rest and relax. So, we booked a room in the hotel Mayetok for about $20-21 per night.

The name of hotel means "estate" or "hacienda". And we found out that it is an awesome, small and cozy place with an excellent service, lovely territory, wide range of meal, they even have electric vehicle charging!

Settled in and back on the road!

But there were one thing about the first destination... We were there 2 years ago with a guided tour, so none of us knew where exactly it is. Both of us are busy people, and this time we had lack of time for planning. Besides, it seemed easy and simple, there is a river and all we need is to take a right exit. We'd recognize it at once as soon as we see, but life made a funny story.

First of all, we found a high place that raise enough above the landscape. This one was familiar, but we took another side. I like it much more this time, maybe because there were just 2 of us, without mess and bustle of a group.

Looking here and there. It seems that we can easily find the right place, just go down along the river.

So we took one path and another, made a lap, tried different maps and navigators. While searching, we saw a hydro electric station with a big dam. It was the first time when I saw it so close. Looks impressive.

Also in the grass we found this tiny wild irises. Their flowering period is over, so it was big luck!

Nuclear Power Plant is a place very difficult to miss. It stands by the main route surrounded by the river and a lake. The water is quite necessary for such enterprise. Looks safe, isn't it?

Surprising solution

When we almost lost a hope to find the place, I came up with a brilliant idea. 2 years ago I took shots with my smartphone during travel. My camera has a geodata tagging feature. If only it is the same device, and I did not delete those photos, and the feature was on ...

Luck was on our side that day :) We found the coordinates and place on a map. Internet connection was slow, but we should bear it!

Thus, we found right exit, and we were right there. I even recognize the dog barking. LOL.

And this is all for now. I will continue in the next post. All the photographs were taken on my trip using camera Pentak K-5 and my smartphone Samsung Galaxy S7.
