Taoheung Restaurant - Star Mansion - Hong Kong

January 2019 · 5 min read
On my second-last day in Hong Kong I was invited to a dim sum restaurant. Which was very nice because dim sum is my favourite Chinese food & usually I wouldn't have eaten it in HK because I thought it would be too expensive. The restaurant is called Tao Heung, located in the Star Mansion at 3, Minden Row. Usually I don't really like restaurant chains, but in this case an exception seems warranted.

Sadly, they bring the food the Chinese way, i.e. not all at once, but one dish at a time whenever they finished preparing it. Hence I couldn't take a good picture of the whole meal together. So, in the above picture you see a very sweet treat. Those are sesame balls (煎堆; jiānduī; jīn dēui; also: 芝麻球; zhīmáqíu; jīmàkàu), made from glutinous rice flour with a filling, usually of red or black bean paste. They are very tasty, but in my meal order the sweet stuff only comes at the end. Well, they came first & I had to live with it.Leider bringt man dort das Essen auf chinesische Weise, also nicht alles auf einmal, sondern eine Speise nach der anderen, je nachdem wann sie fertig sind.

Second came these chang fen or rice noodle rolls (肠粉; chángfěn; chéungfán). They were also quite tasty, though I prefer them with chili or minced meat. In this caste they came as simple noodle rolls with some soy sauce.

Next came another dish I would have eaten as a dessert: sweet cream buns (奶黃包; nǎihuáng bāo; náaih wòhng bāau) which I know as Phoenix buns. Those are essentially bao zi with a sweet custard filling. Again very tasty.

Then came a mainstay of dim sum, one of my favourites, shrimp dumplings (蝦餃; xiājiǎo; hāgáau). They consist of a shrimp filling in see-through rice dough. Again very well prepared. They may have been pre-prepared (this being a chain restaurant), but I didn't notice.

Followed by another typical dim sum dish: steamed meat balls (山竹牛肉丸; shānzhú niúròu wán; sāanjūk ngàuh yuhk yún). I like them very much, too, mostly because of the water chestnut pieces inside.

Last not least came my very favourite dim sum: shaomai (烧卖; shāomài; sīumáai). They mostly consist of shrimp & ground pork inside some lye water dough. As you can see, something went wrong with one of them, but the taste was right as it should be.Als letztes kam dann mein absoluter Dim-Sum-Favorit: Shaomai (nee, wirklich).

Overall, I was very satisfied with the meal. Because I didn't pay, I don't really know the cost, but if I remember correctly I asked during the meal for some of the prices & it was only marginally more expensive than in medium mainland restaurants. If you want to eat proper dim sum for a reasonable price in Hong Kong, Tao Heung is definitely a good choice. Check the link above for locations.
