We've arrived in Bosnia & Herzegovina's capital city Sarajevo after cycling through the Eastern Europe border. We arrived on August 27th after cycling a further 1,480 km, bringing our total to 18,425 km. Starting from hot and busy Istanbul, we headed west seeing greens mountains with forest, more hitchhiking and spent some time volunteering in Bulgaria.

A Change of Scenery ការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរទេសភាព

Since arriving in the Balkans, the scenery changed a lot. The population decreased dramatically so villages and towns were sparsely populated and quiet. Every house had a decent amount of land to grow crops and flower gardens. It no longer felt like being in the Middle East, mainly due to a massive change from Islam to Christianity and a significant drop in nationalism. Of course there are still towns with a diverse mix of religious building and the occasional flags being flown but the people we spoke to seemed to care more about unity and respecting differences than the superiority of their race and the protection of their national borders. In Sofia city centre we walked past churches (Catholic & Orthodox), mosques, and a synagogue. and we did the same again in Sarajevo.

Collecting stamps ការសន្សំតែមប្រៃសនីយ

The Balkan countries are very small in size so it has been easy collecting stamps on our passport. The border crossings are easy and quick, especially since our passport gets us free visa for the remaining European countries on our route. The only downside is we have to exchange our money and get a new sim card every time. Soon enough, when we enter Croatia the Schengen visa and EU roaming rules apply so we'll have one currency (Euro) and sim card to rule them all!

Full-time Fruit Picking ការបេះផ្លែឈើពេញម៉ោង

In the Balkans we saw a lot of fruit trees to pick from on the roadside. Blackberry bushes grow in the wild and we arrived during the right season to pick them. They grew prolifically along the highway so whenever we needed a rest, we were able to snack on some wild berries. In the rural areas, we'd often see trees full of fruit - completely untouched. They're planted by the road so we'd assume it was for everyone. They may not be the supermarket pretty varieties but we certainly appreciated some fresh fruit.

Taking the risk ការប្រថុយនឹងគ្រោះថ្នាក់

Back in July, we went to an exhibition about Balkan Prides in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. "Pride" happens around June/July each year in cities over the world to celebrate (or demand) equality for the LGBT community. This exhibition displayed photos of pride from the Balkan countries over the many years they have been running. It highlighted the happy side where people are celebrating their identity, and the sad side where protesters are showing their disgust or hate towards the LGBT community. The exhibition included a timeline wall displaying facts about prides that were held in the past 20 or so years. Sadly the earlier ones were very violent and resulted in many injuries.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will be having their first pride this year in Sarajevo. It was organised for September so we had the opportunity to attend. It will most likely be a low-key event to avoid attracting counter protests.

Time is ticking fast for us (or we have been traveling slowly?). The autumn season for Europe is approaching and we will continue west towards Croatia, Slovenia, Italy up until Portugal. We now have a deadline to enter the UK for the Work Visa by November 15th.
