Last time I showed you preparations & training for the dragon boat races in Shaoguan. Such races are traditionally held at the time of the Dragon Boat Festival. Since I had never before seen anything like that, I went there with my then girlfriend to watch the races.
Beim letzten Mal zeigte ich Vorbereitungen & Training für die Drachenbootrennen in Shaoguan. Solche Rennen gibt es traditionell natürlich zur Zeit des Drachenbootfestes. Da ich sowas noch nie zuvor gesehen hatte, ging ich mit meiner damaligen Freundin zu den Rennen.
2007 was the last year that the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu, 端午节, Duānwǔ jié) was not a public holiday in the PRC. The commies originally abandoned it, but re-instituted it from 2008 on. Nobody really knows where or how the festival originated, but one popular legend has it, that some official in the Warring States period who was liked by the people drowned himself in a river. The people tried to rescue him & to commemorate this, nowadays there are these races. You can read more about it in the Wikipedia link above or here.
2007 war das letzte Jahr, in dem das Drachenbootfest kein Feiertag war. Die Kommis hatten ihn eigentlich abgeschafft, aber 2008 wieder eingeführt. Der Ursprung des Festes ist weitgehend unbekannt. Eine populäre Legende besagt, daß in der Zeit der Streitenden Reiche ein beim Volk beliebter Offizieller sich in einem Fluß ertränkte. Das Volk versuchte, ihn zu retten, & um dieser Aktion zu gedenken, gibt es jetzt diese Rennen. Mehr dazu gibt es im obigen Wikipedia-Link.
Since we were a bit early, there was time to walk around. We had arrived at the (then) main railway station & had to cross the Zhenjiang, on which the races would be held, to get to the official guest area. From the railway station you could already see the stands for the officials which was located at the finish line, which you see above. Below is the start, marked by some river barges.
Da wir etwas zu früh waren, spazierten wir ein bißchen durch die Gegend. Wir waren am Bahnhof angekommen & mußten den Zhenjiang, auf dem die Rennen stattfanden, überqueren, um zum offiziellen Bereich zu kommen. Vom Bahnhof aus konnte man schon die Tribüne für die Offiziellen sehen, die am Ziel aufgestellt worden war. Auf dem unteren Bild sieht man den Start, der durch Frachtkähne markiert war.
On the other side of the river, the whole staging area was still open to the public, so people were swarming the place. The photo below shows part of the riverside reserved for the teams. As you can see, there was absolutely no luxury provided for the teams. Unlike the officials, they didn't even have seats.
Der Gäste- & Mannschaftsbereich auf der anderen Seite des Flusses war noch für die Allgemeinheit geöffnet, weshalb entsprechend viel los war. Unten sieht man den für die Mannschaften reservierten Bereich. Luxus war für diese offenbar nicht vorgesehen. Anders als für die Offiziellen gab es nicht mal Sitzgelegenheiten.
You can also see that it was quite an international affair, at least half the teams came from abroad. There were teams from the Philippines, Italy, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Australia, Canada & the USA.
Man sieht auch, daß es eine recht internationale Angelegenheit war. Mindestens die Hälfte der Teams kam aus dem Ausland. Es gab Mannschaften von den Philippinen, aus den Niederlanden, Indonesien, Australien, Kanada & den USA.
As usual, services at the event were provided mostly by student volunteers. It's pretty common for Chinese students to do something like this. It looks good on the CV & perhaps you get even some points for your studies. Since nothing had been going on yet, the girls below were preparing themselves in a fairly relaxed manner.
Für den Service sorgten, wie bei solchen Gelegenheiten üblich, studentische Freiwillige. Das macht sich gut auf dem Lebenslauf & vielleicht gibt es auch ein paar Punkte für's Studium. Da noch nichts los war, bereiteten sich die Mädels unten recht entspannt auf ihre Aufgabe vor.
Since there was still some time left, we walked around a bit more. Near the train station I saw the German future:

That's how some German politicians (particularly in Berlin) envisage furniture transport in times of "climate crisis". Will be wonderful to work as a mover, esp. in the German winter. Will we also have motorbike taxis?
So stellen sich jedenfalls manche deutsche Politiker (v.a. in Berlin) den Möbeltransport in Zeiten der "Klimakrise" vor. Wird ganz wunderbar für Möbelpacker, besonders im deutschen Winter. Wird es auch Motorradtaxis geben?
Finally the time had come & the races started. Because I was a foreigner & it was 2007 in a fairly small city, we could enjoy the races from the "Honorable Guest Area". Nobody checked credentials or asked for an invitation.
Schließlich kam dann doch die Zeit der Rennen. Da ich als Ausländer im Jahr 2007 in einer relativ kleinen Stadt etwas ganz Besonderes war, konnten wir die Rennen vom Bereich für "Ehrengäste" aus verfolgen. Niemand kontrollierte mich oder fragte nach einer Einladung.
Above you see a local team in the lead. 2nd are the Canberra Ice Dragons. (Don't ask me why an Australian team has ice in its name.) I have 3 videos of these dragon boat races on Youtube: no. 1, no. 2 & no. 3. The quality is rather bad, though, because I uploaded them long ago.

During a break, there was time for a chat with some of my students who were volunteering there as well. In this case serving the most popular herbal tea drink of China.
Während einer Pause war Zeit für einen Besuch bei einigen meiner Studentinnen, die dort auch aushalfen. Sie servierten einen beliebten Teedrink.

During another break there was time to take a look at the officials. They got a better deal than the teams, it seems. They not only could sit, but even got fruits & sweets, as well as water & herbal tea:

One team was clearly more on a holiday trip than actually a racing team: The "America New Jersey Dragon Boat Federation Women's" team.
Eine Mannschaft war wohl eher auf Urlaub als auf Rennen eingestellt: Das Team "America New Jersey Dragon Boat Federation Women's".
They obviously had only half a team. So, they needed an Italian helmsman, some Chinese rowers & a Chinese drummer. Not to mention that they didn't really look well-trained. Quite a difference to local teams like this one:
Hatten gerade mal eine halbe Mannschaft. Also brauchten sie einen italienischen Steuermann, einige chinesische Ruderer & einen chinesischen Trommler. Übermäßig austrainiert sahen sie auch nicht aus. Ziemlicher Unterschied zu lokalen Teams wie diesem:
Before I forget to mention it: There is of course also traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival. Most common is zongzi (of which I don't have a picture for some reason). That's sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The rice has usually a filling of meat or bean paste, but that varies greatly. For more info on traditional festival food, see here.
Bevor ich es vergesse: Es gibt natürlich auch traditionelle Speisen zum Drachenbootfest. Am verbreitetsten sind Zongzi (wovon ich seltsamerweise kein Bild habe). Dabei handelt es sich um in Blätter gewickelten Klebreis, normalerweise gefüllt mit Fleisch oder Bohnenpaste, aber es gibt viele Variationen.

The Dutch men also fighting a local team. They obviously had a lack of team members. A few Dutch women had to help them out.

Don't know what that says about the appreciation they got. Anyway, if you ever have the chance to visit dragon boat races, do it. It's an interesting experience. Which you can't have in Shaoguan anymore, though. I asked a friend from Shaoguan whose parents still live there. They haven't heard anything about local dragon boat races in recent years. But there are traditional dragon boat events in a lot of other places.
Weiß nicht, was das über die Anerkennung aussagt, die sie bekamen. Egal: Wer mal die Chance hat, Drachenbootrennen zu sehen, sollte sie jedenfalls wahrnehmen. Sehr interessantes Erlebnis. Welches es in Shaoguan nicht mehr gibt. Fragte eine Freundin aus Shaoguan, deren Familie noch dort lebt. Sie haben in den letzten Jahren nichts von irgendwelchen Drachenbootrennen gehört. Es gibt aber genug traditionelle Drachenbootrennen in anderen Städten.
