Visit the Azores #3: Country style accommodation with paradise potential [EN/GER]

The flight to Flores leaves in the early afternoon. We were quite excited when getting on the small propeller plane.

After 75 partly turbulent minutes we arrive at the flower island. The landing on Flores is a small experience itself: the plane heads for the tiny landing strip, the cliffs and the sea come closer and closer, short minutes of tension - and a perfect landing of the pilot :)

When landing, it is raining heavily. We quickly pick up our small hopper at the car rental company: a Ford Fiesta. We wonder if our big suitcases fit in the car at all? Sure, no problem - if you flip the rear seats.
After a short stop at the supermarket where we stock up most important food, we drive to our accommodation: Aldeia da Cuada.

Why did we decide to stay at the other end of the island?
Aldeia da Cuada is a small paradise at the Azores: The small village was built in the 17th century and was, until the 60s, the home for almost 130 Azoreans. At that time, most of the villagers emigrated to America, leaving a deserted village on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
For several years now, an Azorean couple has been rebuilding the village and its 20 stone cottages step by step, transforming it into an authentic oasis of tranquillity.

We were housed in the Casa da Esmeria, the cottage that was first restored by the couple.

We spend the first evening on Flores sitting in the small garden and enjoying the peace and the views. It is a perfect place to relax. What we do not know by now:
We will leave spontaneously tomorrow morning for a wild crossing to Corvo...

Der Flug nach Flores geht für uns am frühen Nachmittag. Wir steigen gespannt in den kleinen Propellerflieger.

Nach 75 teilweise turbulenten Minuten kommen wir auf der Blumeninsel an. Die Landung auf Flores ist ein kleines Erlebnis für sich: Das Flugzeug steuert auf die winzige Landebahn zu, die Klippen und das Meer kommen immer näher und näher, kurze Minuten der Anspannung – und eine einwandfreie Landung des Piloten.

Bei der Ankunft regnet es in Strömen. Wir holen schnell unseren kleinen Wagen bei der Autovermietung ab: einen Ford Fiesta. Kurz fragen wir uns, ob die großen Koffer überhaupt in das Auto passen? Klar, kein Problem - wenn man die Rücksitze umklappt.
Nach einem kurzen Stopp im Supermarkt, bei welchem wir uns mit den wichtigsten Lebensmitteln eindecken, geht es weiter zu unserer Unterkunft: Aldeia da Cuada.

Einmal quer über die Insel

Wieso haben wir uns für eine Unterkunft am anderen Ende der Insel entschieden?
Aldeia da Cuada ist ein kleines Paradies auf den Azoren: Das kleine Dorf entstand im 17. Jahrhundert und war bis in die 60er Jahre die Heimat für knapp 130 Azoreaner. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wanderten die meisten Dorfbewohner nach Amerika aus und hinterließen ein verlassenes Dorf am Rande des atlantischen Ozeans.
Seit einigen Jahren baut ein Azoreanisches Ehepaar das Dorf und seine 20 Steinhäuschen Stück für Stück wieder auf und verwandelt diesen Ort in eine authentische Urlaubsoase der Ruhe.

Wir wurden in der Casa da Esmeria untergebracht, das Häuschen, das vom Ehepaar als erstes restauriert wurde.

Den ersten Abend auf Flores verbringen wir im kleinen Garten und genießen die Ruhe und die Aussicht. Hier können wir die Seele baumeln lassen und entspannen. Was wir an diesem Abend noch nicht wissen: Morgen früh brechen wir spontan auf zu einer wilden Überfahrt nach Corvo…
