EXPO ASTANA 2017 - Probably the most futuristic abandoned Place on Earth [EN/DE]

Hey guys! I survived the world's second coldest capital and have arrived in Almaty after an hour and a half flight within the country. Today I would like to tell you about my second day in Astana. Yesterday it was much warmer with up to 17°C, but there were strong gusts of wind, so the temperature felt as low as on Thursday.

Hallo Leute! Ich habe die zweitkälteste Hauptstadt der Welt überlebt und bin, nach einem eineinhalbstündigen Inlandsflug, mittlerweile in Almaty angekommen. Heute möchte ich euch aber erstmal von meinem zweiten Tag in Astana erzählen. Gestern war es mit bis zu 17°C deutlich wärmer, jedoch gab es starke Windböen, somit war die gefühlte Temperatur ähnlich niedrig, wie am Donnerstag.

After breakfast I headed straight to the Expo 2017 site on foot, so I walked a few kilometres and passed many large construction sites again. I really wonder what Astana will look like in 10 years when everything will (hopefully) be finished. On the way, however, there was already a highlight to admire with this huge, white building. Later I researched that this was the city courthouse.

Nach dem Frühstück machte ich mich gleich zu Fuß auf den Weg in Richtung des Geländes der Expo 2017. Also ging es wieder über einige Kilometer, vorbei an vielen Großbaustellen. Ich frage mich wirklich, wie Astana wohl in 10 Jahren aussehen wird, wenn hier alles (hoffentlich) fertig ist. Unterwegs gab es aber mit diesem riesigen, weißen Bauwerk schon ein Highlight zu bestaunen. Später recherchierte ich, dass es sich dabei um das städtische Gerichtsgebäude handelt.

Finally arrived at the entrance of the Expo area, I already noticed that it seemd to be quite abandoned. A security guard approached me and I was already worried that I was not allowed to enter this place. I asked him politely if the access was allowed. He spoke a few words in Russian, which I of course didn't understand, but he nodded. What a relief!

Endlich am Eingang des Expo Geländes angekommen, merkte ich bereits, dass es ziemlich verlassen erscheint. Ein Sicherheitsmann kam auf mich zu und ich war bereits besorgt, dass ich diesen Ort gar nicht betreten darf. Ich fragte ihn gleich höflich, ob der Zugang erlaubt sei. Er sprach ein paar Worte auf russisch, die ich natürlich nicht verstand, aber er nickte dabei. Was für eine Erleichterung!

You don't think the Death Star from Star Wars really exists? Well, the landmark of the exhibition site immediately reminded me of it. I don't know if I've ever seen a bigger, sphere-shaped building.

Ihr glaubt, den Todesstern aus Star Wars gibt es nicht wirklich? Tja, das Wahrzeichen des Ausstellungsgeländes hat mich sofort daran erinnert. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich jemals schon ein größeres, kugelförmiges Gebäude gesehen habe.

The other visitors here could almost be counted on one hand, I could hardly believe my luck. Where else can you find such an architecturally interesting and futuristic, but almost empty place?

Die anderen Besucher hier konnte man wirklich fast an einer Hand abzählen, ich konnte mein Glück kaum fassen. Wo sonst findet man einen architektonisch so interessanten und futuristischen, aber menschenleeren Ort?

It almost seems a bit surreal. The digital signs light up, music sounds from the loudspeakers, everything seems to be prepared for the big crowds of visitors, really a unique atmosphere.

Es kommt einem fast ein wenig surreal vor. Die digitalen Hinweisschilder leuchten, aus den Lautsprechern ertönt Musik, alles scheint auf den großen Besuchersturm vorbereitet zu sein, wirklich eine einzigartige Stimmung.

It is sad, however, how much money was spent here on a one-off four-month event. I hope the city administration will find a way to continue attracting visitors with this place.

Traurig ist es trotzdem, wie viel Geld hier für ein einmaliges, viermonatiges Ereignis ausgegeben wurde. Ich hoffe, die Stadtverwaltung wird eine Möglichkeit finden, mit diesem Ort auch weiterhin Besucher anzulocken.

After this extensive photo tour I went for lunch to the directly neighbouring shopping center, which is even more modern and huge than the one I visited on the first day. There was no lack of visitors there either.

Nach dieser ausgiebigen Fototour ging es zum Mittagessen in das direkt angrenzende Shoppingcenter, das noch moderner und größer ist, als jenes, das ich am ersten Tag besuchte. Hier mangelte es auch nicht Besuchern.

In the late afternoon I took a taxi to the other side of the river, which I could not reach on the first day. The highlight here is clearly the "Pyramid of Peace and Reconciliation", which somehow spreads a mysterious atmosphere. It sounds strange, but somehow the whole government district has a mysterious aura. No wonder there's no shortage of conspiracy theories about this city. On YouTube you can find many videos about it, if you are interested.

Am späten Nachmittag fuhr ich noch mit dem Taxi zum anderen Flussufer, das ich am ersten Tag nicht erreichen konnte. Das Highlight ist hier eindeutig die "Pyramide des Friedens und der Eintracht", die irgendwie eine mysteriöse Stimmung verbreitet. Es klingt seltsam, aber irgendwie hat das gesamte Regierungsviertel eine geheimnisvolle Aura. Kein Wunder, dass es nicht an Verschwörungstheorien zu dieser Stadt mangelt. Auf YouTube findet ihr viele Videos dazu, wenn es euch interessiert.

From the hill on which the pyramid is located, one has an excellent view of the buildings on the opposite bank of the river on one side and further architectural highlights on the other.

Vom Hügel auf dem sich die Pyramide befindet, hat man eine hervorragende Aussicht auf die Gebäude des gegenüberliegenden Flussufers auf der einen Seite und weitere architektonische Highlights auf der Anderen.

The monument "Kazakh Eli" and the "Haart Sultan Mosque" immediately catch the eye. Especially the gigantic mosque impressed me very much. My wide angle was barely enough to capture the dimensions of this building, truly impressive!

Sofort ins Auge stechen das Monument „Kazakh Eli“ und die „Haart Sultan Moschee“. Vor Allem die gigantische Moschee hat mich sehr beeindruckt. Mein Weitwinkel reichte kaum aus, um die Ausmaße dieses Gebäudes einzufangen, wirklich sehr imposant!

So that's it for now with my reports about Astana. Before I explore Almaty extensively, I'm going on an excursion into nature tomorrow. I am very curious about the Charyn Canyon, which is called the little brother of the Grand Canyon. My impressions of this place, I will tell you of course within the next days. Have a nice weekend!

So, das wars erstmal mit meinen Berichten über Astana. Bevor ich Almaty ausgiebig erkunde, mache ich morgen erstmal einen Ausflug in die Natur. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf den Charyn Canyon, der als kleiner Bruder des Grand Canyon bezeichnet wird. Meine Eindrücke von diesem Ort, werde ich euch natürlich in den nächsten Tagen mitteilen.
