Around the time of my visits to Macao & Humen, I also walked around Shaoguan a bit, in the city proper, meeting people & just taking pictures. Today I will share some of the last impressions I had in 2007. There will be one more cycling post & some comprehensive stuff later.
Um die Zeit meiner Besuche in Macao & Humen latschte ich auch häufiger durch Shaoguan, um Leute zu treffen & Bilder zu machen. Heute zeige ich ein paar der letzten Eindrücke aus dem Jahr 2007. Es gibt aber später noch einen weiteren Radlerbeitrag & einige Zusammenfassungen.
There was another "Western" restaurant in town, called RBBT (for rabbit), which my then-girlfriend knew. So, I went there with her to check out how Western it was. Not that much. Below you can see their sandwiches. The stuff on the right side is fairly normal, on the left is toast with pork jerky, though. Don't know about the US, but I don't think it's common in Europe.
Es gab ein weiteres "westliches" Restaurant in der Stadt, genannt RBBT (für rabbit = Kaninchen), das meine damalige Freundin kannte. Also ging ich mit ihr hin, um zu sehen, wie westlich es war. Nicht sehr. Unten sieht man deren belegte Brote. Das Zeug rechts sieht recht normal aus, links ist aber Toast mit Trockenfleischfetzen. Glaube nicht, daß das in Europa üblich ist (aber vielleicht in den USA; keine Ahnung).
The goulash below was very tasty. But this is not really Western, either. You can find tasty dishes like that all over China. I've eaten it a lot & was never disappointed, not even when I once bought it in a Chinese fast food restaurant called Kungfu.
Der Gulasch unten war sehr lecker. Aber kann man eigentlich nicht westlich nennen. Sowas findet man in ganz China. Habe ich oft gegessen & war nie enttäuscht, nicht mal, als ich es ausnahmsweise in einem Schnellimbiß namens Kungfu kaufte.
The restaurant itself was fairly new & hence in a fairly good state. Note the pseudo-natural setting. Rabbits, I have seen not.
Das Restaurant selber war noch relativ neu & daher in einem ordentlichen Zustand. Man beachte die Pseudonatur. Kaninchen sah ich übrigens keine.
Shaoguan has a theatre. Walked by that place quite often, but was only told rather late what it actually was. Well, not being a theatre guy, I wouldn't have gone there, anyway, I suppose.
Shaoguan hat ein Theater. War oft dran vorbeigelaufen, aber erfuhr erst spät, worum es sich handelte. Naja, da ich eh nie ins Theater gehe, kein Verlust, nehme ich an.
The football stadium features this interesting arc. Don't really know why it was adorned with the Olympic rings (just like the sports ground in Shaoguan University). There was never anything Olympics-related in Shaoguan.
Das Fußballstadion zeigt diesen interessanten Bogen. Weiß nicht, warum er mit den olympischen Ringen verziert ist (genau wie die Sportanlage in der Uni Shaoguan). Es gab in Shaoguan nie irgendwelche olympischen Veranstaltungen.
Another of those large wasps or hornets. This one was sitting on the ground, seemingly exhausted. Didn't realise what was going on until this tiny spider appeared. Obviously, the wasp was caught in the spider's web. Still think it's a bit optimistic of the spider to attack, but I have seen other spiders succeed in such cases.
Wieder eine dieser riesigen Wespen oder Hornissen. Diese saß offenbar erschöpft auf dem Boden. Realisierte erst, warum, als diese winzige Spinne erschien. Anscheinend hatte sich die Wespe in deren Netz verfangen. Erschien trotzdem etwas optimistisch von der Spinne, anzugreifen, aber ich habe bei sowas schon Spinnen als Sieger gesehen.
Then I found my first proper rhinoceros beetle. Couldn't find out which exact species it was. The horn looks a bit like Xylotrupes, but the overall shape doesn't. Anyway, it was big, roughly the size of my big toe.
Dann fand ich meinen ersten "richtigen" Nashornkäfer. Fand aber nicht heraus, welche Art es genau war. Das Horn erinnert an Xylotrupes, aber der Körperbau stimmt nicht ganz. War jedenfalls groß, ungefähr wie mein Dicker Zeh.
Ein weiterer interessanter Falter. Bin mir nicht sicher, aber es könnte ein Ringelspinner sein.
Looks particularly interesting when it tries to hide itself, which obviously doesn't work on these tiles.
Sieht besonders interessant aus, wenn er sich zu verbergen sucht, was auf den Fliesen ganz offensichtlich nicht funktioniert.
Then there was another giant beetle. Perhaps a female rhinoceros beetle. It was lying on its back when I found it, so I got a good picture of its underneath.
& noch ein Riesenkäfer. Vielleicht ein weiblicher Nashornkäfer. Lag auf dem Rücken, als ich ihn fand, wodurch ich ein gutes Bild von seiner Unterseite machen konnte.
After I helped it to right itself, I got a nice portrait (& some other shots, see way below).
Nachdem ich ihm beim Umdrehen geholfen hatte, konnte ich ein nettes Porträt machen (& andere Bilder, s.u.).
& for some strange reason, there was another male rhinoceros beetle. You never see even one of them & then in a matter of days 2 (or 3, if the other one is a female).
& seltsamerweise war da noch ein männlicher Nashornkäfer. Nie sieht man auch nur einen & dann innerhalb weniger Tage 2 (oder 3, falls das andere ein Weibchen ist).
Since I didn't know when or whether I would be back in Canton, I ate a lot dim sum in those last weeks. Here's another such feast. My beloved shaomai had to be there. The shrimp dumplings on the right are also among my favourites.
Da ich nicht wußte, wann oder ob ich nochmal in Kanton sein würde, aß ich viel Dim Sum in den letzten Wochen dort. Unten sieht man ein derartiges Festmahl. Meine geliebten Shaomai mußten natürlich dabei sein. Die Shrimp-Taschen rechts gehören auch zu meinen Lieblingen.
In my "Walking the campus" post, I had a picture of a young swallow peeking out of its nest. Well, since then it had grown quite a lot. Now it was almost ready to leave the nest. Still curious, though.
In meinen Campuswanderungen fand sich das Bild einer jungen Schwalbe, die über den Nestrand linste. Seitdem war sie um einiges gewachsen, fast groß genug, um das Nest zu verlassen. War aber immer noch neugierig.
Another day, another dim sum restaurant.

From the distance between the tables you can see that it was a bit more expensive. Which also tells you that I had been invited to eat there. I am too cheap for such places.
An dem Abstand zwischen den Tischen erkennt man, daß es etwas teurer war. Was auch zeigt, daß ich dorthin eingeladen wurde. Ich bin zu geizig für solche Restaurants.
Down the street from this restaurant, you find this strange building. I wonder what the architects were thinking.
Vom Restaurant aus ein Stück die Straße entlang findet sich dieses seltsame Gebäude. Man fragt sich, was die Architekten sich dabei dachten.
Below you can see what happened to a lot of the elephants which got poached in Africa. Looks nice, but it's probably not for nature lovers.
Unten sieht man, was aus einer Menge Elefanten wurde, die in Afrika gewildert wurden. Sieht nett aus, wird Naturliebhabern aber wohl weniger gefallen.

At the university, some students were training for a dragon dance (not to be confused with a lion dance). Don't know what event they were practicing for. Have never seen them in action.
An der Uni übten einige Studenten für einen Drachentanz (nicht zu verwechseln mit einem Löwentanz). Weiß nicht, für welche Veranstaltung trainiert wurde. Habe sie nie in Aktion gesehen.
